Former India opener Gautam Gambhir has been appointed as the new head coach of the Indian cricket team BCCI Secretary Jai Shah made the announcement on Tuesday. Jai Shah posted on X that he was delighted to welcome Gautam Gambhir as the new head coach of the Indian cricket team.

Modern cricket is developing rapidly and Gautam has witnessed this changing environment firsthand. After performing in various roles throughout his career, I am convinced that Gautam is the ideal person to take Indian cricket forward. He is perfectly prepared to take on the role of the most demanding coach and the BCCI has fully supported him in this new journey.

The former left-arm batsman will succeed Rahul Dravid as India’s head coach and will have his first responsibility in the away series against Sri Lanka. The left-arm batsman, who appeared before the BCCI Cricket Advisory Committee for an interview, was the favorite candidate to become the head coach of the Indian cricket team.

Gambhir was part of the 2007 Twenty20 World Cup-winning Indian squad and the 2011 ODI World Cup-winning squad. The former Delhi batsman played 58 Tests, 147 ODIs and 37 Twenty20s, scoring 4,154, 5,238 and 932 runs respectively. He was the mentor of Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and the Shreyas Iyer-led team won the IPL
